For four seasons, he played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats three on the varsity team and one on the freshman.

The San Diego Rockets picked him as the seventh overall pick of the 1967 NBA draft. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him as a wide receiver in the 11th round of the 1967 NFL Draft, even though he had not played college football.
The Portland Trail Blazers selected him in the 1970 NBA expansion draft after playing three seasons with the Rockets. He was soon traded to the Los Angeles Lakers by the Blazers. Riley played with the Lakers for five seasons.
While on the Lakers’ 1972 NBA Championship team, he served as a reserve. After that, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns during the 1975–76 NBA season.
After earning an average of 7.4 points per game over his nine seasons in the league, the spouse of Chris Rodstrom retired in 1976. In 1977, he went back to the NBA as a broadcaster for the Lakers.
He was then hired as an assistant coach in, November 1979. This was after assistant coach Paul Westhead took over the team’s head coaching duties following Jack McKinney’s near-fatal bicycle accident.

Riley soon became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He was one of the first coaches to employ a 1-3-1 half-court trap to pick up the pace of the game.

Starting with the 1991–92 season, he became head coach of the New York Knicks. This was after he worked for NBC for one year as a television commentator.
He soon became president and head coach of the Miami Heat in 1995, following his resignation from the Knicks via fax. His new position gave him complete control over basketball operations.
