She was born Karen Ruth Bass on October 3, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, United States of America. As of the date of writing the article, Karen Bass is 70 years old.
Her mother was a homemaker named Wilhelmina Bass and her father was a postal letter carrier named DeWitt Talmadge Bass. She grew up in the Fairfax and Venice neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
She attended Alexander Hamilton High School where she graduated in 1971. The ex-wife of Jesus Lechuga soon started volunteering for Bobby Kennedy’s presidential campaign while in middle school.
From 1971-1973, she studied philosophy at San Diego State University. In 1982, she graduated from the USC Keck School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program.
She then went to California State University, Dominguez Hills where she graduated in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree in health sciences.
In 2015, she earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California.
Her Career
She along with other local community organizers founded an organization in the 1980s called Community Coalition. Its mission is to help transform the social and economic conditions in South Los Angeles that foster addiction, crime, violence, and poverty by building a community institution that involves thousands in creating, influencing, and changing public policy.
She was soon elected to represent California’s 47th Assembly district in 2004. She served the cities and communities of Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, Culver City, West Los Angeles, the Crenshaw District, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Leimert Park, View Park-Windsor Hills, Little Ethiopia, and parts of South Los Angeles and Koreatown.
She was appointed California State Assembly 2007–08 legislative session majority floor leader and the 2005–06 legislative session majority whip by Speaker Fabian Núñez.
She also worked as vice chair of the Legislative Black Caucus during her tenure as majority whip.
