He was born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario. As of the date of writing the article, The Weeknd is 33 years old.

His father is Makkonen Tesfaye and his mother is Samrawit Tesfaye, also known as Samra Tesfaye. He happens to be the only child of his parents.

His parents got divorced after his birth.

During an interview, he had this to say about his relationship with his father, “I saw him vaguely when I was six, and then again when I was 11 or 12, and he had a new family and kids. I don’t even know where he lived — I’d see him for, like, a night. I’m sure he’s a great guy. I never judged him. He wasn’t abusive, he wasn’t an alcoholic, he wasn’t an asshole. He just wasn’t there.”

The Weeknd also had this to say about his religious belief, “I dunno…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through things.”

He started releasing music anonymously on YouTube in August 2009. He soon met Jeremy Rose, and together they released three songs: What You Need, Loft Music, and The Party & The After Party.

He released his debut mixtape House of Balloons on March 21, 2011. On August 18, of the same year, the son of Samra Tesfaye released his second mixtape Thursday.

He soon dropped his third mixtape, Echoes of Silence, which was released on December 21. From January to March 2012, he performed at various Ontario universities, such as Hamilton’s Mohawk College, Waterloo’s Laurier University, and McMaster University.

On November 13, 2012, he dropped a compilation album consisting of re-mixed and remastered versions of his 2011 mixtapes and three additional tracks titled Trilogy.

The album sold over 86,000 copies in the first week and debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200. His debut studio album Kiss Land was released on September 10, 2013.

The album sold 96,000 copies upon release and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. He soon collaborated with American singer, songwriter, and actress Ariana Grande on the song Love Me Harder.

He dropped the song “Earned It” from the soundtrack for the 2015 American erotic romantic drama film Fifty Shades of Grey on December 23.
