He was born Toby Keith Covel on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, U.S. Toby Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62. He died after battling stomach cancer.

His father is Hubert K. Covel, Jr. and his mother is Carolyn Joan. He has two siblings: a brother and a sister. He went to Highland West Junior High and Moore High School.

He moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the 1990s where he started his music career and eventually signed a recording contract with the American record label owned by Universal Music Group Mercury Records.

On February 12, 1993, he released his debut single titled Should’ve Been a Cowboy which made it to number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs.

On April 20 of the same year, he released his debut studio album titled Toby Keith which produced tracks such as He Ain’t Worth Missing, Should’ve Been a Cowboy, Wish I Didn’t Know Now, A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action, Some Kinda Good Kinda Hold on Me, Close but No Guitar, and others.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album platinum for shipments of one million copies.

American music critic and senior editor for the online music database AllMusic Stephen Thomas Erlewine had this to say about the album, “It is given a production that’s a bit too big, clean, glossy and cavernous for Keith’s good—it fits the outsized sound of early-’90s radio, but not his outsized talent—but beneath that sheen the songs are very strong.”

The father of Shelley Covel Rowland soon signed a record deal with Polydor Records Nashville. In September 1994, he released his second studio album titled Boomtown.

The album went platinum and featured songs such as Who’s That Man, Big Ol’ Truck, Upstairs Downtown, You Ain’t Much Fun, No Honor Among Thieves Nathan, Woman Behind the Man, and others.

Toby soon signed with A&M Records and in April 1996, he released his third studio album titled Blue Moon. The album produced tracks such as Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine on You, A Woman’s Touch, Me Too, Closin’ Time at Home, She’s Gonna Get It, The Lonely, and others.

The album earned platinum certification.

He released his fourth studio album on June 24, 1997, titled Dream Walkin’ after returning to Mercury Records. It featured songs such as We Were in Love, Dream Walkin, I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying, You Don’t Anymore, Jacky Don Tucker (Play by the Rules, Miss All the Fun), Double Wide Paradise, She Ran Away with a Rodeo Clown, I Don’t Understand My Girlfriend, and more.

In October 1998, Keith released his first greatest hits album titled Greatest Hits Volume One. On November 2, 1999, he dropped his fifth studio album titled How Do You Like Me Now?!

It produced tracks such as How Do You Like Me Now?!, When Love Fades, Country Comes to Town, She Only Gets That Way with Me, Die with Your Boots On, You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This, Hold You, Kiss You, Love You, I Know a Wall When I See One, and others.

He soon dropped his sixth album on August 28, 2001, titled Pull My Chain. It featured several tracks such as I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight, I Wanna Talk About Me, I Can’t Take You Anywhere, You Leave Me Weak, The Sha La La Song, Pick ‘Em Up and Lay ‘Em Down, Forever Hasn’t Got Here Yet, You Didn’t Have as Much to Lose, and much more.
