Michelle Miller Morial, a news anchor and journalist, was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 8, 1967. She earned her B.A. in journalism from Howard University in 1989.

In 1997, Miller completed her M.A. in urban studies at the University of New Orleans.

Miller worked as an intern in 1988 for The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and then for Washington, D.C.’s “ABC News Nightline.” In 1989 and 1990, she worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, contributing articles to the “South Bay” and “Valley” sections.

After working for Orange County Newschannel in Santa Ana, California for two and a half years as a general assignment editor, producer, and news reporter, Miller moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1993.

There, she continued to cover news and was appointed anchor of WIS-TV’s “Weekend Morning News.”

Miller relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1994, where she worked as a weekend anchor and news reporter for WWL-TV, a CBS affiliate. In 1997, she relocated once more to become the host of “The Early Edition.”

Miller was an adjunct professor of mass communication and journalism at Dillard University from 1998 to 2001. She has also given lectures at Louisiana State University, Loyola University, Southern University of New Orleans, Wellesley College, Drew University, Howard University, and Stony Brook University.

She also got married to Marc H. Morial while she was living in New Orleans; he was the city’s mayor at the time and later became the National Urban League’s president and CEO in 1999.

After relocating to New York City in 2004, Miller was employed by CBS News as a national journalist and stand-in anchor for “B.E.T. Nightly News.” She joined CBS News in 2005 as a northeast bureau correspondent.

Miller has held advisory board positions at the School of American Ballet and the Scripps Howard School of Journalism at Hampton University. She was also a member of the National Communications Advisory Council for March of Dimes.

Miller is a member of Jack and Jill of America and the Links, Inc. Greater New York City Chapter.

She was president of the Black Journalists Association of Southern California and the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists in addition to being a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Initiative for the United Way of New Orleans and vice president of the YWCA of Greater New Orleans.

Miller was honored with the Radio and Television News Directors Association’s 1998 Edward R. Murrow Award as well as Columbia University’s 2013 Dupont Award.

Furthermore, she was honored as the National Sports Foundation’s Woman of the Year and won the National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence Awards in 1998 and 2013.

Marc H. Morial happens to be the father of Margeaux Morial and Mason Morial.

Marc Haydel Morial, the CEO and a politician, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 3, 1958. He is the son of the late Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial, the first African-American mayor of New Orleans, and Sybil Haydel Morial, a teacher and university administrator.

Morial graduated from a Jesuit high school in 1976 after attending. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 with a B.A. in economics and African-American Studies, and from Georgetown University Law Center in 1983 with a J.D.

Morial was named Legislative Rookie of the Year during his two years in the Louisiana State Senate in 1992. Morial practiced law in private practice at one of the top legal companies in the Gulf South, Adams and Reese, before entering politics.

Chisom v. Roemer, one of his most significant U.S. Supreme Court rulings, established that the Voting Rights Act should be used when electing judges. As a result, Louisiana elected its first African-American judge.

From 1994 to 2002, Morial held two terms as mayor of New Orleans. During his tenure as mayor, a number of advancements were accomplished, such as a decrease in crime, police reform, and the approval of a sizeable bond issue.

In addition, Morial presided over the US Conference of Mayors for the latter two years of his presidency. One of the earliest African-American political dynasties is the father-and-son Morial family.

Morial was named president and CEO of The National Urban League, a prestigious civil rights group, in May 2003.

Since that time, Morial’s Empowerment Agenda has sought to raise the League’s profile locally and globally, revitalize its varied constituency, and build on the foundation of its nearly century-old tradition.

Morial was listed as one of the “100 Most Influential Blacks in America” by Ebony magazine and listed as one of the top 50 non-profit executives in America by Non-Profit Times. Morial was named chair of the 2010 Census Advisory Committee in June 2009.

Morial has two kids and has been married to Michelle Miller, a news anchor.
