Police in the town of Ayune, Sinaloa, found three dead bodies inside a black SUV the following day; one of the deceased was later identified to be José Rodrigo Aréchiga Gamboa.

He was dead from a gunshot, wrapped in cloth, and had a black plastic bag over his head. His sister and her spouse were identified as the other two bodies. Later reports said that senior Sinaloa Cartel authorities most likely gave the order for his assassination.
